Verizon About the Lack of Google Wallet On the Galaxy Nexus

After yesterday’s news concerning the lack of Google Wallet on the upcoming Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus — confirmed by Google — the carrier has made a couple of statements and we’ll let you be the judge.

We’re working to provide expanded services that will provide the best security and user experience in the market around m-commerce. We expect to provide access to an open wallet when those goals are achieved“, says Verizon. Apparently, Verizon is concerned about security and doesn’t regard Google Wallet as being a secure-enough solution.

Later on the carrier made it sound like it was Samsung’s fault, saying that the lack of Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus was because of hardware requirements of the app. “Google Wallet is different from other widely-available m-commerce services. Google Wallet does not simply access the operating system and basic hardware of our phones like thousands of other applications. Instead, in order to work as architected by Google, Google Wallet needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones“. The carrier is continuing “commercial discussions with Google on this issue” though.

The widely spread idea behind the missing Wallet app was that Verizon, together with AT&T and T-Mobile, is part of and heavy funder of ISIS, a joint venture for mobile payments planning to be a competitor for Google Wallet. However, ISIS was created before Google’s Wallet and, even if the decision would be Verizon’s (to protect ISIS), it has a precedent. The Google Nexus S at that time didn’t have Wallet either but the community took care of it.

However, despite Google’s clear confirmation — “Verizon asked us not to include this functionality in the product” — Verizon’s statement goes on: “Recent reports that Verizon is blocking Google Wallet on our devices are false. Verizon does not block applications“.
