Sharp Smartphone Camera Sensor Combines Thinness, Stabilization


We have seen some fantastically thin smartphones, especially ones arriving this past year. While many often manage to slim-down in most places, there’s often that recurring budge up at the top, housing the phone’s bulky camera. A new component from Sharp hopes to keep the size of a camera sensor from negatively impacting phone thickness too much, while still maintaining high image quality.

The RJ63YC100 is a 12.1-megapixel, 1/3.2-inch CMOS sensor. Perhaps most importantly, it includes optical stabilization, a feature which can add some unwanted thickness to a sensor, but also makes those 12.1 million pixels all the more valuable by helping to keep light cleanly focused on them all. The entire package measures-in at 5.47 millimeters thick.

At that size, it’s still going to be a very tight squeeze, but it’s nevertheless impressive to see so much technology crammed into such a compact package. Bulk shipments of the sensor start in January, so you might hope to start seeing this part in phones later next year.
