Samsung Droid Charge Gets Gingerbread; The Wait Is Over

Last week, we heard a rumor that Verizon subscribers would soon see an eagerly-anticipated Gingerbread update arrive for the Samsung Droid Charge. Things certainly appeared to be ready to go, with Verizon publishing materials relevant to the upgrade on the Charge’s support page. A rumor accompanied that discovery, claiming that Verizon would start distributing the update on what’s now yesterday. Maybe things started-off slowly, because we didn’t hear anything about Charge users getting update notifications on Tuesday, but today we can confirm that the Charge’s Gingerbread distribution is in full-swing.

While Charge owners are probably just happy to finally see their phones brought into the present (though even Gingerbread’s days are numbered with the first official Ice Cream Sandwich updates ready to start arriving on some lucky handsets in the near future), this update’s release really stands in our minds as an odd one; it’s not too often you see a company releasing new source code before even delivering the update to users.

We touched on a few of the Charge-specifc improvements included with this release when we discussed it last week. For a more complete run-down on what’s included, check out the Verizon source link below for full release notes.
