Indonesian BlackBerry Bold 9790 Launch Gets Out-Of-Hand


It seems that US stores full of Black Friday crazies aren’t the only places dangerous for shoppers today; a crowd of ardent smartphone fans in Indonesia just went a little out-of-control during a BlackBerry launch event, resulting in police intervention and several injuries.

The event marked the arrival of the Bold 9790 in the country, and to help introduce it, the handset was being sold at a discount. The combined introduction of a new model along with those savings created substantial interest in the launch, attracting the kind of crowd you rarely see for a non-expo smartphone event elsewhere.

While a huge crowd of smartphone lovers sounds pretty great at first, the situation started to deteriorate after word started spreading through the crowd that there wouldn’t be enough discounted Bold 9790s to go around, the organizers not having expected a crowd of this size to descend. That news went over about as well as you’d expect, with a commotion breaking out as attendees struggled to be one of the lucky ones to get their hands on a 9790.

In the end, police broke-up the crowd, and the injuries sustained in the fracas were reportedly minor. And here we thought the lines outside Apple stores were bad…
