“The Most Vulnerable Smartphones of 2011” is the name of a recent study conducted by Bit9 where the company is taking a look at which smartphones are most vulnerable to malware exploits and hacking attempts.

The study includes the most popular smartphones on the market and finds that “56% of Android phones in marketplace today are running out of date and insecure Android operating system software”, mostly manufactured by HTC, Motorola, LG and Samsung.

While Android is the most popular smartphone platform at the moment, it is also the number one target to malware attacks. But Bit9 notes that Android phone makers “often launch new phones with outdated software out of the box, and they are slow to upgrade these phones to the latest and most secure versions of Android. In some cases, the phones are not updated at all, as the manufacturers shift their focus to newer models, leaving existing customers stranded with insecure software.” Find the list of the phones below, as ranked by Bit9:

13. Apple iPhone 4 (and older)

12. HTC EVO 4G

11. Motorola Droid 2

10. LG Optimus One

9. Motorola Droid X

8. Samsung Galaxy S

7. LG Optimus S

6. Samsung Epic 4G

5. HTC Wildfire
