What’s T-Mobile’s Role In The New Google Music?

Google’s planning an event scheduled for this Wednesday that looks very much like it will be the launch announcement of a revamped Google Music, now featuring the ability to directly purchase tracks. A photograph included with the invitations gave several hints of its music-related nature, as well as displayed a T-Mobile logo. Now, T-Mobile has announced an after-party with some big-name musical acts in attendance, further solidifying its place as part of Google’s announcement. Just what sort of partnership might we be looking at here?

The worst news we could hope to hear is that Google Music will be an exclusive to T-Mobile users. That could be a temporary condition, as the service ramps-up, but it would still upset a huge number of smartphone users. Maybe the service will be open to everyone, but T-Mobile subscribers would get some sort of enhanced service. That could mean early access to new tracks, or maybe discounts towards their purchases? The concept of a music store is so carrier agnostic that it’s hard to say with any specificity how T-Mobile might fit in. It’s clearly involved somehow, though, but we may have to wait until Wednesday to know just how.
