Compal Communications signed a deal with Microsoft at the end of June which granted the company the use of Windows Phone 7 and made it become original design manufacturer (ODM) for Nokia and Acer; these two aren’t the only companies Compal is building equipment for though.
Microsoft has signed yet another Android licensing agreement, following HTC, Samsung and Quanta, this time with Compal Communications. The deal refers to Compal’s tablets, mobile phones, e-readers and other consumer devices running the Android or Chrome Platform.
With the recent agreement, “more than half of the world’s ODM industry for Android and Chrome devices is now under license to Microsoft’s patent portfolio”, said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, Intellectual Property Group at Microsoft. No further details were made public but given the rumors around the HTC and Samsung agreements we can have a general idea of what it consists of.
