Does the Motorola Droid RAZR Have a Locked Bootloader?

Unlocking the bootloader of a smartphone is the first step to installing a custom ROM, removing bloatware, and essentially making the phone your own. Locking the bootloader, manufacturer’s said, was a requirement of the carriers, and that by unlocking your phone you risked voiding your warranty.

The community didn’t like that attitude very much, and with enough pressure, got a few of the big names to change their tune. Motorola eventually came around and claimed they would release an “easy method” to unlock a phone’s boot loader.

The easiest solution is just to ship phones with an unlocked bootloader, or with a bootloader that can be unlocked via a menu option in the recovery ROM. The harder was is via a software utility that must be downloaded and installed on a computer and applied via a USB cable connected to the phone.

That said, has Motorola given users a way to unlock the bootloader on the Droid RAZR?

In a word: no.

They haven’t kept their promise.

Of course that isn’t to say that you can’t unlock the bootloader on the Droid RAZR. You just can’t do it yet. Luckily for us, the developer community will do what Motorola has promised — and failed — to do.

UPDATE:

According to a response on a Motorola Europe Facebook post:

“… the software version featured on Motorola RAZR has been built with an unlockable/relockable bootloader included. However, whether that feature is enabled is dependent on carrier and operator partner restrictions.”
