Apple Store iPhone 4S Sales Go Reservation-Only
Launch weekend for Apple’s iPhone 4S was as big a hit as anyone could have hoped for, with over four million of the new smartphone sold. Though Apple’s been pretty good at keeping up with stocks so far, are supplies starting to run down? An update to the purchasing procedures at Apple Stores suggests so.
It was clear well before Friday’s launch that demand for the 4S was overwhelming. We saw carriers in the US dial-back their estimations for when they might receive new inventory. While those who dallied might have missed the boat on early sales, they could always just show up an their local Apple Store and wait in line for the chance to buy one directly, right? Not anymore, it turns out, with Apple updating its website to now indicate that in-store purchases are by reservation only.
If you visit the site after 9 p.m. you’ll have an opportunity to reserve a 4S for pickup at an Apple Store the following morning. Obviously, these reservations are going to be extremely limited, so you’d better be ready straight at 9 p.m. if you want any hope of getting yours in. Though Apple is clearly being careful in pacing itself to avoid running out of the 4S altogether, the arrival of new stocks soon, as well the initial run of sales dying down, should help towards keeping the model available.
