What Are Motorola’s NFC Plans?

Motorola rounded-out last week by revealing its new pair of Bluetooth headsets, the Elite Sliver and Elite Flip. On their own, they don’t make for the kind of product launch that usually gets us excited. This time, though, the presence of a certain feature in those headsets gives us a clue about what we could be seeing soon on Motorola Androids: NFC.

Both headsets support a mode wherein they can be paired to a phone using NFC. By tapping the Elite Silver or Flip to a phone with an NFC transceiver, the pair can auto-negotiate their Bluetooth connection. The problem is, if Motorola is building accessories supporting this mode of communication, where are its phones that can do the same?

It only stands to reason that Motorola will soon be producing handsets capable of this NFC-assisted Bluetooth pairing. As of right now, we haven’t heard about specific plans for including NFC in an upcoming smartphone, but it’s entirely possible it will be present on a model we already know about, and just haven’t gotten the full picture of its hardware specs yet. We’ll get our next shot tomorrow, when Motorola is expected to reveal the Droid RAZR for Verizon; could it be Motorola’s first NFC-capable Android?
