BlackBerry Outages Spread to US and Canada
Yesterday, we looked at the service interruption currently underway for many BlackBerry users around the globe. At that point, based on the company’s brief comments, it seemed like RIM had a handle on what had gone wrong, and was in the process of cleaning up its mess. We were hopeful that meant a swift resolution to the ongoing data connectivity outages, but we can’t yet bring you that good news. Instead, it seems that as of this morning the outages are affecting more users than ever, with Canadian and US BlackBerry users now among those touched by this incident.
RIM has confirmed that the connectivity problems are spreading, but describes them as “intermittent”. There’s been no update as to the cause of these problems, first reported as a failure of RIM’s system to gracefully transition from a bad network switch to its backup. While that may have gotten things rolling, the ongoing problems reportedly stemmed from the resultant message backlog that RIM’s servers still had to process. If that’s still the case with these spreading outages, we can’t say, but the scope of the problem suggests there may be more issues yet-to-be-resolved beyond just a data backlog.
RIM continues to affirm its commitment to fixing things for all of its users ASAP, claiming its employees are working around the clock to get everything back to normal.
