What’s The Deal With The BlackBerry Data Outage? RIM Explains All

BlackBerry users across the globe have been suffering though service failures for the past couple days, unable to access email and BBM. RIM’s been working frenetically to restore service to all affected users, and hadn’t taken the time earlier to address its users and explain just what was going on. Now the company has been able to make a brief statement regarding the outage, and discuss how it plans to get everyone back online.

If you were in the US or Asia, you may not have noticed any problems, but things haven’t been so lucky for BlackBerry users in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India, and parts of South America. RIM describes the problem as the failure of a back-up system to properly engage when a main network switch failed. The effects of that outage have since snowballed, and a large part of the current problems users are having accessing their messages is a consequence of RIM’s servers still trying to get through processing that backlog of data they missed. There’s no ETA on when everything will be back to normal, but RIM says it’s working “as quickly as possible.”
