Bugfix Update Looks Imminent for Motorola Photon 4G on Sprint

Motorola’s Photon 4G on Sprint received a pretty minor software update last month, only really affecting WiFi functionality. There’s been a little more substantial collection of bugfixes that already leaked, but has yet to see official distribution. Signs are now pointing to that update arriving in the very near future, with testers already receiving it on their phones.

Those who registered with Motorola to help test the code are seeing their Photons upgraded to system software 198_6. As far as anyone can tell, this is the same as the previously-leaked version. Google Video chat now works in this release, letting you take advantage of the Photon 4G’s front-facing camera and Sprint’s WiMAX network to do some video conferencing. There’s a new social location app included, and a bug that would stop the phone’s proximity sensor from functioning until the device was reset has been corrected. Unfortunately, it still looks like some Photon owners are having WiFi problems following installation of this update, but the problem isn’t affecting all users.

Assuming this test distribution goes well, we might hope to see the update start hitting Photon users at large later this week.
