Microsoft Reader eBook Software Saying Goodbye Next Year
With all the success that Amazon has found with the Kindle, and Apple with iBooks, you’d think that Microsoft would stand up and dust off their old Microsoft Reader software to compete with them in Windows Phone 7 and Windows, but sadly that’s not the story. Microsoft has just shared the sad news that their Microsoft Reader project is currently on life support.
Starting November 8th 2011, you won’t be able to purchase any new ebook in the .lit format, and as of August 30th 2012 no more Reader software will be available for download. If you currently own .lit ebooks, like many of us here do, you can still keep reading these after the events take place, though that will depend on you keeping an activated device with you from there on.
Sadly Microsoft hasn’t mentioned if any other company will be in charge of offering any migration options or tech support for those of us affected by the change. I must admit many of us hoped for a new dawn on the aging Reader platform after the release of Windows Phone 7, but it seems Microsoft has got bigger fish to fry somewhere else.
