HTC Starts Unlocking Bootloaders With The European Sensation

HTC returned to the issue of locked bootloaders on its smartphones earlier this month, explaining just how the process of going about unlocking your phone will work. At the time, it said that owners of the Sensation, Sensation 4G, and EVO 3D would get their opportunity to do so sometime this month. As of now, the tools are live on HTC Dev, but there’s a pretty big restriction that could seriously hamper your ability to unlock your handset.

For the time being, if you want to throw caution to the wind, give up your warranty coverage, and embark down the road of unlocking, your HTC smartphone can’t be from a US carrier. If you’ve got the Sensation as sold in Europe, you should be good to go, but US users still have a bit of a wait on their hands. From what HTC’s said, it should still be quite soon, but for the moment you’re out of luck. The company hasn’t commented on what’s going down, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it involved some last-minute reassurances to carriers that users aren’t about to start bricking their phones en masse or using unauthorized software to wreak havoc on their networks.
