Google Nexus S Coming to AT&T Next Week

While Google fans in the States have a choice between the Nexus S on T-Mobile or the Nexus S 4G on Sprint WiMAX, there hasn’t yet been a good way to get set-up with the smartphone on AT&T. Sure, Canada has the Nexus S with the right bands for use on AT&T down here, but that would see you paying full retail price and missing-out on any subsidies. That’s all about to change, with Google announcing that an AT&T version of the Nexus S is about to become available at Best Buy stores.

Pre-sales of the flagship Gingerbread model start today, with the smartphone actually becoming available this Sunday, July 24. With how far prices have fallen since the first incarnation of the Nexus S arrived late last year, you’ll be able to pick this one up for right around $100 on-contract.

With the Nexus S coming to AT&T, and the Samsung Galaxy S2 supposedly hitting the US next month, we could be looking at a new spike in the number of smartphone users who have devices capable of NFC. Could it be the critical mass needed to see systems like the NFC-based mobile payment schemes we’ve heard about really take off?
