BBM Integration Coming to BlackBerry Apps
Are you a BlackBerry Messenger junkie? The RIM-exclusive instant messaging platform is already one the biggest draws BlackBerry phones have going for them, and it’s looking like BBM is about to get a whole lot more prevalent. RIM has just finalized the BlackBerry Messenger Social SDK, letting developers build BBM into their BlackBerry apps.
A restaurant ratings app, using the the Social SDK, could enable you to send out invitations to a group of friends over BBM, once you’ve manage to choose the perfect spot to meet at for dinner. Game developers could take advantage of the SDK to allow participants to chat with each other in real time, all using standardized BBM tools.
Compatibility with these sort of in-app BBM functions will be dependent on BlackBerry Messenger 6, already in testing. By the time the final version of the app rolls out, third-party apps taking advantage of this functionality may begin to arrive in the App World. Developers interested in working with these tools can get started now over on RIM’s BlackBerry developer pages; the final 1.0 SDK is available for Java-based apps, while the WebWorks tools are still in beta.
