Samsung Captivate gets Leaked AT&T Gingerbread ROM

Samsung saw some leaks of Gingerbread for several of it’s Galaxy S series phones several months ago, with no official word at the time of a pending official release. More recently, it was officially announced that Samsung’s Galaxy branded smartphones would be receiving an official update to Gingerbread. Several overseas models have already received updates while the USA models have yet to see a leak or official release until today with the first leak of a Gingerbread ROM for the Captivate.

SamFirmware, a site well known for posting leaked firmware and other info about Samsung devices posted today two new firmware updates for the i897 Captivate, bringing it up to Gingerbread 2.3.3. The two builds made available are versions UCKE3 dated May 26, 2011 and UCKF1 dated Jun 8, 2011 respectively. While Gingerbread has been available on the Captivate for some time through custom ROMs like CyanogenMod and ROMs ported from the European Galaxy S models (i9000), this is the first “official” leaked build from Samsung with Gingerbread. Notably, HSUPA support still remains disabled in this ROM, while devices such as the Motorola Atrix received an update that enabled HSUPA after much ado about the artificial restriction.

In the meantime, HSUPA remains unofficially available to Captivate users by using a combination of i9000 Radio, Kernel, and PDA firmware, making this release unattractive to heavy data users. It is unlikely that AT&T/Samsung will lift the HSUPA restriction before officially releasing Gingerbread, but we remain hopeful and will keep an eye out for release.
