Verizon To Start Testing Droid 2 Global Gingerbread Distribution

Last month, Motorola promised Droid owners that Gingerbread was on its way for everything released since the original Droid; starting with the Droid X, the rest of the family including the Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, and Droid Pro would be getting Gingerbread updates this year. While those last three were given an ETA of “before the end of the third quarter”, Motorola isn’t wasting any time getting them together. Verizon already has the support documents for the Droid 2 Global’s update live on its site, and is reportedly ready to start testing the update distribution later this week.

Select Droid 2 Global owners will be invited to participated in the update’s soak test, where Verizon and Motorola see how it holds up to some real-world testing en masse. When the Droid X reached this stage in the testing of its own Gingerbread update, we were only about a week away from widespread OTA deployment. That update had some problems of its own, so the companies may take things a bit slower this time, but it should be here sometime this month.

Right now there’s still no word on when the update might be ready for the standard Droid 2, but at the rate Motorola’s been working on these, it’s a pretty safe bet that you won’t be waiting until the end of September for the rest to arrive.
