Motorola Droid X Gingerbread Update Now Going Out OTA

Motorola has committed to releasing Gingerbread updates for its Droid X, Droid Pro, Droid 2, and Droid 2 Global, all set to arrive by the end of Q3. The first model to receive its updates was announced as the Droid X, and just last week Motorola rounded up some owners of the smartphone to help it test out its code. Those users started receiving their Gingerbread updates over the weekend, and apparently the distribution went without a hitch, since Verizon has now taken the reigns off and is sending the update out en masse.

Droid X owners should be receiving their Gingerbread updates OTA shortly; Verizon hasn’t released a statement yet, but we’ll likely see the distribution happen in waves, going out throughout the week. After the Droid X is taken care of, which Droid will be next? We’ve heard about sporadic reports of the Droid Pro getting Gingerbread this week, but there just aren’t enough of them to seem like more than a glitch for now. We’d love to be wrong, but we also don’t want to get Droid Pro owners’ hopes up without something more concrete to go on.

If you’re impatient, you can try a manual install of Gingerbread for the Droid X, but most users should probably just wait for it to arrive OTA.
