Motorola Droid 3 To Ship Without Gingerbread?

While Gingerbread’s on its way for Motorola’s Droid X², it still feels a bit odd at this point in time to be releasing a brand-new, high-end smartphone with a year-old operating system. If you were hoping that this may have been just an outlier for Motorola, we’ve got some bad news: a leaked Verizon screenshot shows the upcoming Droid 3 as shipping with Froyo installed, as well.

Assuming this photo’s legit, we’re not necessarily destined to receive the Droid 3 running Android 2.2. We’ve heard of June as a rumored release window, and while the start of the month’s nearly upon us, there could be enough time for Gingerbread testing to conclude and have it ready if we’re talkinga bout a late-in-month release.

You might think that all of this could be rendered moot by an enthusiastic Android homebrew community, putting together some custom ROMs to bring these Droids up to modern Android versions, but the unlockable bootloaders Motorola has promised won’t be around for several more months, at least. For now, don’t count on easily-moddable Motorola hardware.

Even if the Droid 3 does come with Froyo, we’re nearly bound to see a Gingerbread update arrive before the end of summer.
