HTC Preparing Thunderbolt Mini?

HTC may be preparing a smaller or cheaper version of the HTC Thunderbolt codenamed Mecha S, according to the user agent profile pictured above. UAprofs, as they are more commonly known, are used to convey a device’s properties for purposes of web page rendering and MMS exchange. Since the UAprof for the Mecha S (S=small? Thunderbolt was codenamed just Mecha) shows this model offering only a 320 x 480 HVGA screen resolution, it is likely to be either a physically smaller handset, or one which is the same size but lower-end.

With HTC having a history of at least once following up a popular model with a “mini” version in the HD mini (meant to tap into the HD2’s winning formula) — and with rivals Sony Ericsson and HP/Palm currently cornering the tiny phone market — we suspect a Thunderbolt Jr. is the likeliest scenario. Other information in the UAprof tips Mecha S as a CDMA device (as we would expect), but otherwise there’s no evidence linking it to Verizon directly. Since Verizon is the only carrier with a seeming dearth of upcoming models from HTC (AT&T has Holiday and Lead, Sprint has Kingdom and Shooter, and T-Mobile has Doubleshot), it makes sense that the Taiwanese OEM is working on something for Big Red, and there are certainly worse brands to evoke than the well-received Thunderbolt.
