Best Buy Mobile Upgrade Checker Raises Some Security Questions

If you’re a Best Buy Mobile customer you probably used the Upgrade Checker service at least once in order to find out whether you are Eligible for a new phone or not. The service can be accessed from Best Buy’s website and requires you to fill in some information about yourself like your mobile number, billing ZIP code and carrier.

If you’re an AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile subscriber you will be required to fill in just one more bit: a security measure like your social security or PIN number. However, if you’re on Sprint, all phone numbers on the account will be displayed without any security measure.

KXAN contacted both Sprint and Best Buy about the matter. While a Sprint call center representative said a PIN code and secret question are always required to access any account, a Best Buy representative said that information is not required by Sprint to check for upgrades.

Probably a miscommunication between the two companies but one that definitely raises some security questions which we hope will be answered (and even fixed) as soon as possible. Privacy and security issues are becoming more and more important as technology takes a larger part of our lives day after day.
