Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite Brings Wireless Storage To iPhones

In a world where unlimited data plans are pretty much dead and the limited ones are not of much help to the current tendency of moving everything to the Cloud, this is one of those ideas that many of us have been waiting for. Seagate has just released their GoFlex Satellite Hard Drive, which aside from being a good portable solution for just about any desktop customer, also has the advantage of offering a free iOS Application that allows iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad owners to access all their information through Wi-Fi.

The GoFlex Satellite offers 500GB of storage through Wi-Fi 802.11n and has a battery life that can go for up to 25 hours of casual usage or 4 hours of continuous video streaming. GoFlex Access is the Application you’d use to access your documents, movies and music through the wireless connection.

Is it worth carrying an extra device around? Well, surely 4 hours of video streaming is not the best battery life for the main reason anybody would be interested in more storage, and the $200 price tag makes the deal kind of steep for many also. I guess the bargain here is that even if you’d spend an extra $100 on an iPhone with more storage, you’d still not reach the whopping 500GB included in the GoFlex Satellite. It’s kind of an irony that Apple sells their non-portable Time Capsule for a lot more money and even offers remote access to Mac customers through MobileMe, but has no local or remote access to extended storage services for their own iOS platform. So yeah, it’s not cheap, but may be a great solution for you if you consider it.

No details have yet been made official as to when it launches, but it all points out to it being released after June 30th. You may pre-order it at Best Buy if you’re interested.
