Sony Ericsson: No Windows Phone 7 Until The Platform Takes Off
Sony Ericsson appeared to be open-minded about Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 even though at that time it hasn’t “made any concrete announcement about when and how we would introduce Windows phone 7 into the portfolio”. Now, four months later, the smartphone manufacturer is determined to stay away from the platform if it “doesn’t take off”.
Sony Ericsson already had a prototype working but it looks like the plans for Windows Phone have been put on hold as Jan Uddenfeldt, Chief Technology Officer and head of Sony Ericsson Silicon Valley, thinks choosing Android was a great move.
At Sony Ericsson’s annual Business Innovations Forum held at Stanford, Uddenfeldt emphasized on Android as the main focus for the company. The Japanese-Swedish joint venture will not manufacture any Windows Phone-powered smartphone “if the operating system doesn’t take off”. The real question is, when it will take off, will Sony Ericsson still stand a chance to compete with OEMs on board like Nokia, HTC, LG, Samsung and Dell?
