Best Buy Kicking-Off HP Veer 4G Sales With Free-On-Contract Deal?

HP’s Veer 4G may be pushing the limits of how small a smartphone can get while still maintaining some degree of usability, but there’s no arguing with how impressive it seems to fit a full-fledged smartphone into such a tiny package. While the Veer’s form factor is going to get it a lot of attention, it will need more than looks or a gimmick to attract sales, especially with webOS hardly carrying the brand recognition of something like Windows Phone 7 or Android. A great price could end up serving as the clincher to make the smartphone’s upcoming launch a success, and while the $100 AT&T will be asking isn’t a bad starting-off point, we’ve just heard that Best Buy intends to offer the brand-new phone free, with contract.

We’re no stranger to seeing phones go for free with a two-year service agreement, but that’s usually after they’ve had the chance to cool off for awhile, and aren’t the hot new thing anymore. For a decently-specced smartphone to see this kind of deal on its launch day is nearly unheard of.

According to the source of this rumor, Best Buy will only have the white Veer 4Gs, but are you really going to split hairs over the selection of colors at this price? If you can’t wait until the 15th, Best Buy is accepting pre-orders, taking a $50 deposit that you’ll get back as a Best Buy gift card upon completing the transaction and signing-on for service. Unless you really need to buy something else at Best Buy, you just might be better off waiting until the launch on May 15.
