Google Now Renting Movies Through Android Market

Google’s plans for selling music may have fallen through in favor of the cloud-based system Google Music is becoming, but that’s only one branch of the media tree. Where negotiations with music labels haven’t led anywhere, the company’s apparently been much more successful in its dealings with movie studios, securing the rights to start offering movie rental through the Android Market, with prices in the $2 – $4 range.

The rental service is launching with thousands of titles available, including many new releases. The terms are similar to those we’ve seen with other online movie rental offerings, including a 30-day countdown starting when you purchase a rental, and a 24-hour window in which you’ll be able to watch the film once you first start viewing it.

Integration with the Android Market means you can use the same features that automatically transfer apps you purchase from a PC straight to your Android smartphone, sending your rental right to the device of your choice. Google is working on expanding access to the system, and anything running Froyo or better should be able to work with rentals within a matter of weeks. Head on over now to check out Google’s selection of films.
