Sprint Nexus S 4G Gets Its First OTA Update

We’ve got to hand it to Sprint for not dallying when it comes to getting updates out to smartphones it’s only just begun selling. First it hits Samsung Replenish owners up with a few bugfixes the same weekend the phone goes up for sale, and now we’ve learned that the also-Samsung-made Nexus S 4G is in a similar boat, with a maintenance update of its own already going out OTA.

It’s no secret that Sprint sort of jumped the gun on Nexus S 4G sales, letting some customers pick theirs up as early as mid-last-week. Sales officially began yesterday, so by now there should be plenty of new owners out there ready to receive Sprint’s update.

The patch brings the phone’s software up to version GRJ22, and like the update for the Replenish, it tackles a few minor bugs. Those include unspecified improvements that should give the phone a slight performance boost while making it more secure. You’ll now be able to use NFC to communicate between two Nexus S smartphones directly, and Google Voice should now properly handle international roaming.

Unlike the Replenish release, there’s no time frame available on how long Sprint expects it will take to get GRJ22 out to all users, but you should certainly expect to see it arrive by the end of the week.
