RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server To Support Android And iOS

Well it seems RIM hasn’t stopped making headlines today. This time, in a sort of shocker move, they’ve just made it official that the next release of their BlackBerry Enterprise Server will support iOS and Android devices. The idea is that customers of their current BlackBerry Enterprise Server can opt for an additional option to control other smartphone platforms. It’s based on RIM’s newly acquired ubitexx technology and allows for easy deployment of multiple components in a virtualized environment on a single server.

“The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is designed to address a growing market and respond to requests from enterprise customers who want a secure multi-platform device management solution from a company that already delivers the gold standard for enterprise mobility,” said Peter Devenyi, Vice President, Communications Platform Group at Research In Motion. “We recognize the opportunity to continue leading in the enterprise market by providing customers with a common platform to help simplify the management of a variety of mobile devices.”

We’re not really sure how much additional money will that extra option cost, but it’s clear that RIM hasn’t lost focus in the fact that the BlackBerry is just one of their products, and not everything the company offers. By embracing other smartphone platforms, they’re opening the door to remain relevant in the Enterprise market even if their phones aren’t all that popular any more. We’ve seen this happen in the past as Microsoft allowed other platforms to use their Activesync technology, so the concept is proven to be a Win-Win scenario for software companies.

Certain features being released in BlackBerry OS 7, like BlackBerry Balance will sadly not be supported by other platforms in this release, but we know all you really wanted was to keep up with your buddies in BBM anyways.
