Eldar Murtazin: Windows Phone 7 Sales Disappointing at 674,000

According to Eldar Murtazin, Windows Phone 7 sales numbers are disappointing at his estimate of 674,000 units sold. Windows Phone 7 was launched on October 21 for Europe, Asia and Pacific, with a little bit of delay, until November 8 for the United States. Even if we take the more recent date, the platform has been out for nearly six months.

In all these months we haven’t heard anything specific from Microsoft (except in December when we heard that OEMs have shipped 1.5 million Windows Phone 7s to carriers) and even more, the recent Earnings Report for Q1 of 2011 excludes Windows Phone 7.

OEMs didn’t say much about Windows Phone sales — except LG who was worried about sales at the beginning of January — and neither did carriers but we’ve heard a very optimistic 2,000,000 number being mentioned in January by Greg Sullivan in an interview to Bloomberg News, regarding the number of devices shipped.

In all this silence, Eldar Murtazin made his predictions, calculations and analysis and came up with his own number: a disappointing 674,000 units sold. He also explains the silence from Microsoft, carriers and OEMs by saying that concealing the information is saying very much about “catastrophic” numbers.

Anyways, from the total number of 1.5 million units shipped to carriers, Murtazin subtracts all the Windows Phones Microsoft provided for free to its employees and gets to a number he claims closer to reality: 674,000, a definite failure, he says.

We’re not sure whether this number covers Q4 of 2010 — since launch till the end of the year — or another, more extended period and we’re not sure what to do with this number. The truth is that Microsoft needs to come public sooner or later with real figures if it doesn’t want all the hear-say and speculation about sales to shed a negative light on the platform.
