HP webOS Getting In-App Purchases This Summer
Just how much revenue developers can expect from in-app payments – users shelling out a few extra bucks for new features in apps they’ve already downloaded – is an open issue at the moment. Its value may depend on how a developer choose to implement it, some offering extras that are truly “extra” and not needed for casual use, with others more along the lines of in-app unlocks taking the place of separate paid versions. After Apple paved the way, RIM announced its intention to join in on the action, with Android just catching up this spring. Now HP will be the latest to offer the functionality, with in-app purchases coming to webOS this summer.
Alongside in-app transactions, HP will be introducing promo codes to the webOS Application Catalog. Promotional and discount codes will let developers offer certain users the opportunity to pick up an app for free or at a reduced price. While this may also take until summer to be introduced, there’s a chance it may arrive slightly earlier.
Both these revelations come from an interview with HP’s Richard Kerris, VP of Worldwide Developer Relations for webOS, so you can treat them as gospel. Developers should expect to hear more about implementing these features as summer nears.
