Motorola Defy on T-Mobile Finally Gets Froyo Update

Decided to take the plunge and snag one of the free Motorola Defys that T-Mobile was offering earlier this month? If you did, talk about good timing, because out of the blue Motorola’s finally released the Froyo update for the smartphone, bringing the Defy up to software revision 34.4.9.

All the way back in November we reported on Motorola’s plans for for Android 2.2 on the Defy. At the time, the best Motorola could do for a prediction as to when to expect Froyo was sometime in Q2 of this year. We’d nearly forgotten about the promise since then, but sure enough, smack in the middle of Q2, the software arrives.

It looks like you may have to manually initiate the upgrade, which should show up after you do a search for available system update files. The download itself is 112MB, so think about WiFi if you can’t spare the megs on your data plan. Motorola is on a roll with Froyo updates for its older phones lately, with this one coming out just days after Bravo got some Froyo of its own.

If you’re looking for something rugged like the Defy but maybe a little more recent (and don’t care how oddly bulky your smartphone looks), you may want to check out the Casio G’zOne Commando, coming later this month to Verizon.
