Samsung Gem Android Handset Headed to Cellular South

The mid-range Android 2.1-powered Samsung Gem has just appeared on the Samsung USA site, and although no carrier is listed, its model number suggests that it will be headed to Cellular South — as does the fact that Cellular South already has Gem image assets up on its site (although no product page yet). Sporting a “fastest in category” 800MHz processor, the 3.2-inch, WQVGA Gem was originally seen wearing a Verizon badge, but the letters “XAR” at the end of its SCH-I100ZKAXAR full serial number would seem to indicate that regional carrier Cellular South is now the destination; Verizon phones from Samsung end in “VZW.” The Gem features a 3.2-megapixel camera, TouchWiz interface enhancement, and paltry 124MB of storage — although that can be complemented through microSD. Obviously no word yet on price or release, but don’t expect this one to break the bank — the similarly-spec’ed LG Axis goes for $100 on two-year contract.
