HTC Merge Launched on Alltel, Preloaded with Amazon Appstore

Today, Alltel issued a press release announcing the launch of the HTC Merge, an Android 2.2 smartphone that has been in the wild for many months. It’s essentially a CDMA version of the HTC Desire Z, which means that it’s rocking a 3.8″ WVGA display with an 800MHz CPU and 512MB of RAM. We expect that Verizon will issue a similar press release within the next month. It’s now up for preorder for a reasonable $125.

The big news here is the inclusion of the Amazon Appstore. For Amazon to be successful with their competing application market, they must start getting carriers and OEMs interested in preloading the software, essentially forcing users to use the new platform.
