Verizon Debuts Droid 2 R2-D2 Edition, CPU Back to 1GHz?

Verizon has officially launched its Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 Special Edition handset, which will go on sale September 30th for $249 after $100 mail-in rebate (that will arrive in the form of a debit card). Besides the Star Wars-inspired paint job, matching dock, and wired headset, this model will also come preloaded with R2-D2 sounds, notifications, clock widget, and video, a set of four live wallpapers, and an “exclusive binoculars app,” which we somehow doubt endows the camera with any sort of optical zoom. Oh, and the whole shebang comes packed in box that is said to resemble the fictional material carbonite.

More interesting to us than the bundled swag is any change in specs, and contrary to what we previously reported, it does not seem that R2 will pack the same 1.2GHz processor as the Droid 2 World Edition. At least that’s how the spec sheet reads on the official site, but there is still a slight hope that the 1GHz CPU will get a bump: on the Specs section of said promotional site, above the actual features, it reads “The Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Droid R2-D2 is a special edition Droid 2. Standard device specs are below.”

So could this possibly mean that R2 does NOT possess the “standard specs,” and thus the need for a clarification? Or are we reading way too much into this? Hopefully the first benchmarks will set the record straight, and we can start sleeping again at night.
