Verizon Planning Cloud-Based “Sync & Connect” Service? (Video)
Verizon Wireless may be preparing a cloud-based backup and phone management service called Sync & Connect, suggest the set of slides arranged in the video below. However, since all mentions of the service have been recently purged from the carrier’s site, it’s possible that the initiative has been either postponed or canceled altogether (Google cache maintains a record of numerous references to Sync & Connect, with the majority being answers to FAQs or product feature bullet points).
Specifically, the presentation promises that the service will combine multiple address books while eliminating duplicates; provide a wireless sync between handsets and PCs; manage several email inboxes; send SMS and MMS messages directly from a computer; and organize contact cards into desired groups. The service would join VZW’s current family locator service and either supplement or replace its standalone contact backup feature.
As we mentioned, it’s not at all clear from the source of the documents what stage this program is currently in, although such a product seems like a natural value-add for a carrier that may soon find itself trailing behind the mammouth AT&T-T-Mobile partnership. Also unclear is the need for operators to provide such a service to smartphone users, when OEMs like Apple and HTC are slowly stepping in with competing solutions of their own for customers.
