What’s Coming In Nokia’s Symbian^3 PR 2.0 Update?
It may not be the Android-ification of the Symbian^3 UI that we spied on the Nokia N8 last month, but the upcoming PR 2.0 firmware has its own series of improvements to offer users of Nokia devices. NokiaCentral took a look at some of the changes that will make it into PR 2.0, giving us a preview of what’s to come.
One thing you should notice straight away about PR 2.0 is that page transitions have become faster and more responsive. When you swipe your finger to flip between screens, the software will keep right up with your movements. Speed improvements are a common theme amongst several of the PR 2.0 improvements, including an updated web browser. Unfortunately, that’s a little less impressive, as the browser is still a tad sluggish, but we’ll take what progress we can get.
You’ll be getting a new option for entering text, with the addition of a portrait-mode on-screen keyboard. It may take some getting used to, as the keys get quite cramped together, especially at the bottom of the screen where you may find yourself contorting your thumb to tap them just so.
Nokia will now include its Chat Ovi app, amalgamating buddies using disparate instant messaging applications into a unified contact list. In addition to new apps, look for existing program icons to get makeovers.
You can check out the full PR 2.0 preview below. Look for it to hit the N8 and Nokia’s other recent smartphones, hopefully within the next month or so.
