Motorola Acknowledges Voice Distortion on Some Atrix 4Gs

With widespread reports of call quality issues on the Atrix 4G on both incoming and outgoing calls, Motorola has responded by collecting data both from returned phones marked as having this problem and from users on it’s support forum. It is looking for users to fill out a short survey, providing info on environmental factors that may contribute to the problem (using a case, screen protector, etc.)

Motorola’s noise cancellation technology, which uses input from multiple microphones and a special algorithm to reduce the volume of background noise was previously identified as the source of the call quality problem, but has since been determined only to help marginally. Other reports say that covering the rear microphone while on a call helps, but so far no permanent fix for the issue has been found.

In a possibly related move, Motorola has also announced a pre-release test of it’s first software update for the Atrix, with limited availability to 1,000 Atrix owners on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration for the software test is open until 11 AM central time, 3/25/2011, so if you are interested in joining the limited test group and providing feedback on the update, don’t hesitate to click Motorola support forums (2) below for more info.
