Netflix Streaming Now Working On Android [Update]

We thought it couldn’t be done; Netflix on Android was supposed to require secure new processors, keeping the stream safe from nefarious smartphone-wielding pirates. When the leaked Netflix app that no one could get to work surfaced, fears of no-Netflix-for-existing-Androids seemed confirmed. Well, never say never, because streaming Netflix on Android now appears to be working for many users.

According to the thread on XDA-D, the user who made the find noticed his Netflix app had auto-updated. After this change, he was able to finally connect to streams, watching TV and movies right from his Android.

Success right now is a mixed bag. While everything’s working fine for many users, others get DRM errors, streams that never load, or cut out after playing a second of audio. The EVO, for one, seems to be working quite well, while Thunderbolt users still can’t get the streams to play.

Netflix has been mum on the issue so far, so this could be anything from a fluke, to the beginning of wider Netflix Android support. Considering this is all essentially unauthorized use at the moment, we wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix shuts it all down in the next day or so.

Update: Well that didn’t take long; it looks like the Netflix Android fun is over for now.
