BlackBerry Protect Open Beta Available for North/Latin America

RIM has had its BlackBerry Protect security suite in limited beta testing since last year. After passing the first round of closed beta tests, it is now being made available to BlackBerry owners as an open beta.

BlackBerry Protect provides an all-in-one security solution. It allows tracking of the device via GPS and cell-tower triangulation, remote locking, setting a password, and activating a loud ring to find your smartphone, even in silent mode. You can also display a custom message to the home screen to instruct anyone who finds it how to return it. As a last resort, the device can be remote wiped, including the SD card, to ensure your data is secure.

Also included with the service is an automatic, periodic wireless backup system. The system backs up your contacts, calendar appointments, memos, tasks, browser bookmarks, and text messages to RIMs servers for later retrieval. The automatic backup can be limited only to Wi-Fi, or restricted from operating when roaming to save on data charges.

The beta is available now from BlackBerry App World. For now availability is limited to North America and some parts of Latin America. RIM is expected to make the application available to other countries in the coming months.
