Dock, Shmock; Hack Lets Atrix Use Webtop Over Plain HDMI
There’s no doubting that the ability for Motorola’s Atrix 4G to pull double-duty as a netbook when dropped into its laptop dock is a huge selling point for the smartphone. Not everyone who picks one up, though, is willing to sink even more money into their phone just to use that feature. Luckily for us penny-pinchers, there’s now a hacked version of the files needed to run the Webtop app that handles the phone’s docking mode, letting you use it over a plain HDMI connection hooked up to any compatible monitor.
In order to pull this off, you’ll need your Atrix to be rooted and have its files deodexed so key bits can be modified. Right now, mirroring doesn’t work, but you’ll be able to have the same functionality you would were the Atrix plugged into an official dock.
For best results, you’ll probably want to add a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to the equation, but you can take advantage of the Atrix’s touchscreen to make things work without them, in a pinch. If you’re comfortable making the needed changes to your phone, head over to the XDA-Developers forum to download the needed packages and give it a spin.
