Layar, a popular 3D augmented reality application available for iPhone and Android made its debut on Nokia’s Ovi store today. Layar uses input from multiple sensors on the device to determine your location and direction, and displays digital information about places in view and nearby.

The application requires a device with a GPS, front-facing camera, compass, and accelerometer. Currently supported Symbian^3 devices are the Nokia N8, C7, C6-01, and E7. For S60, the N97 and N97-mini are supported.

Layar operates by overlaying “layers” on top of a view of the real world around you, giving you views of different sets of data. Multiple layers can be displayed at the same time giving you a rich view of the area around you. Layar constantly pulls down new information on the go, keeping you up to date with the latest in your area. There are currently nearly 2000 layers to choose from, some dealing with location-based games, others with store and venue information, and more being added daily.
