Google once again pushed out an update to their widely-used Maps application today, bringing a number of new features related to social networking. Google Places reviews are now integrated with Twitter, and Google Latitude gains the ability to “ping” friends.

The new ability to link Twitter reviews to Google places allows you to share your opinion and other information about the location. The app is integrated with Twitter giving you simple icons, a 1-5 star rating, and a short bit of text to choose from.

Also added is a new feature to Google’s Latitude support, the ability to ping your friends. Latitude allows you to view your friends recent check-ins on the map, and if you see one nearby you can ping them to request a new check-in. Once the friend has checked-in, Google Maps provides a notification of their location, allowing you to meet up.

The update weighs in at a 6MB download and 9MB installation. Many users are still concerned with Google’s lack of support for moving the Maps application and data to SD card, as the program is capable of caching large amounts of data and some Android devices do not have enough on-device storage to hold it.
