BlackBerry Messenger is a popular service and application of RIM‘s that allows users to instant message in real time, directly on their smartphones, among themselves. BGR reports that RIM is preparing to bring the package (service and app) to Android and eventually iOS, diversifying its user pool which was till now restricted to BlackBerry users.

There is no official wording on availability and pricing so far but, according to rumors, RIM might bring the software to these two platforms for free. This though doesn’t rule out the possibility of RIM charging a one-time or recurring fee to non-RIM platform users of the BlackBerry Messenger. The versions destined for other platforms might also be stripped down versions of the original BlackBerry messenger, offering Android and iOS users limited functionality, but the possibility of communication with native BBM users as well as among platforms (sans location and photo sharing, etc).

According to rumors, the Android version is set to hit the Market sometime this year while the iOS version, due to the ecosystem strictness, might be further out. Well let you know more details as soon as we find out. Until then, let us know if you’d use the BlackBerry Messenger — or are willing to pay anything for the app or service — on your Android device or iPhone.
