100 Million iPhones Have Shipped In Less Than Four Years

Apple has become quite popular for having one record quarter after another. Today’s iPad 2 event began with yet another record as Steve Jobs confirmed that they’ve recently shipped their 100 Millionth iPhone.

That’s a lot of phones for a company that only sells one device, is mostly stuck on just one carrier in most of the countries they serve, and didn’t even sell smartphones just five years ago. There are no iPhone variants, you can’t customize it without hacking it, it’s extremely expensive if you want to purchase it without a subsidy, and still, it sells like hot cakes.

We’ll leave it to the history books as to how such a closed and limited platform can reach such great success, but this is just to show why many of us chuckle every time we hear other manufacturers release yet another phone and dare to call it an “iPhone killer”.
