Amazon App Store Launching Later This Month?

According to Millennial Media, Amazon’s app store for Android-powered devices will be launching later this month. Millennial Media is a mobile ad company and as such they may have sources inside companies with first-hand knowledge of Amazon’s timeline — or it could be unsubstantiated hearsay.

Amazon has already gone from a simple online book store, to an online “everything store”, and is now more like an online mall than an individual store, with countless vendors filling it’s virtual shelves with all kinds of goods. Being able to sell product directly to people using smartphones has long been part of Amazon’s strategy. Being able to sell apps and content subscription to those same people is the next logical step.

Amazon may have a hard time ahead. Google’s terms-of-use for the Android Market requires that all payments be processed through the Android Market — not through third parties. This likely means that Amazon’s app store will be either a side-loaded app, or an app pre-installed on smartphones. Either that or Amazon will have to share a large percentage of revenue with Amazon, which is likely what they’re trying to avoid by releasing their own store.

What do you think about Amazon’s app store? Is it a good or bad thing for the Android environment? Let us know in the comments!
