Sony Ericsson officially announced its Xperia Play line of devices at Mobile World Congress, revealing that the device will be headed to AT&T’s network.

The Xperia Play features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz Scorpion single core CPU, a four-inch 480×854 capacitive TFT LCD screen, and will debut running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It comes with a 5.1-Megapixel camera, and supports 480p recording. The CPU is paired with an Adreno 205 GPU running at 245MHz to support accelerating the latest 3D games. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi hotspots are also supported, providing a wide range of connectivity options.

The device is heavily geared toward gaming, featuring a directional pad, two analog touch pads, and dedicated gaming buttons. It comes with a 1500 mAh standard battery, touting five hours and 35 minutes of continuous gameplay. Sony Ericsson expects 50 game titles to be available at launch.

Five models were announced, R800a, R800at, R800i, R800x, and Z1i. Both the R800a and R800at support bands compatible with AT&T, leading to speculation that one is an unlocked device, while the other will be subsidy locked to AT&T. HSPA is supported, with speeds up to 7.2Mbps download and 2Mbps upload.

Availability for the device is expected globally in selected markets from March 2011.
