Unreal Engine 3 on LG Optimus 2X Hardware Wows (Video)
We’ve already seen some of the potential from the combination of high-performance rendering engines and modern smartphone hardware. Last year, Dungeon Defenders introduced us to Unreal Engine 3 running on Android devices, which was more than enough to impress us. Now we’ve got the chance to look at what’s possible when you pipe that software through a dual-core device like LG’s Optimus 2X.
Epic Citadel was created as a tech demo to show off the capabilities of the Unreal Engine on iOS hardware, released last September. Unlike the use of the engine in Dungeon Defenders, Citadel features expansive outdoor environments, placing greater demands on the smartphone and its graphics hardware.
This Optimus 2X demonstration is the first time we’ve seen Epic Citadel running on Android hardware, signaling that the company has been hard at work on optimizing UE3 for the platform. Considering the swarm of dual-core phones about to surround us, it will be nice to have apps based on this engine to really push the hardware to its limits and reveal just how impressive smartphone gaming can be.
While things look awesome with the phone hooked up to a big-screen TV, it’s almost sad to think of all that eye candy being covered up with your thumbs when playing a game on your smartphone alone. Check out the clip below:
