MAGLDR Coming to HTC Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2, Dual Boot OS
Dark Forces Team (DFT), the group which brought us several useful tools for the HTC HD2 such as HardSPL and MAGLDR announced support for two new devices today; the HTC Rhodium (Touch Pro 2, Tilt 2) and HTC Topaz (Diamond 2, Pure). MAGLDR will support dual-booting Windows Mobile 6.5 and Android on these devices.
MAGLDR is a custom built on-device bootloader which replaces the factory bootloader, and provides support for loading multiple operating systems. In addition, it supports advanced debugging and ROM dumping features. The bootloader is currently only released for the HTC HD2 platform, where it supports loading of Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile 6.5, and Android.
The custom bootloader extends the device’s ability to load an operating system from the on-board memory (NAND) to the user-expandable memory (SD Card). This allows the user to switch between various operating systems quickly and easily. MAGLDR also supports a number of other features, such as a fully functional game of Tetris running in the bootloader, and advanced debugging facilities.
In an update to his Twitter, Cotulla (a member of DFT) reminds users that MAGLDR for Topaz/Rhodium will not support loading Windows Phone 7. These devices utilize an older CPU (ARMv6) that is not capable of executing the instruction set WP7 is built on (ARMv7).
MAGLDR does not replace the device’s original SPL, allowing the user to return back to a stock configuration at any time. This minimizes the risk involved with loading a custom operating system, which can result in a non-booting device, otherwise known as a “brick”.
