HTC To Acquire Part Of Online Gaming Company OnLive

After investing in London-based Saffron Digital, a global leader in digital multimedia delivery, HTC has revealed its plans to acquire a stake in a US-based online gaming company.

OnLive is a gaming platform in the cloud, offering low-end hardware owners the possibility of playing games online by processing everything on the server and sending compressed information to devices like smartphones for instance. HTC is planning to buy 5.33 million OnLive shared for a total of approximately $40 million, in a move meant for the company to keep up with mobile gaming and its delivery.

While Microsoft can deliver content to Windows Phone 7 devices via Marketplace and Sony Ericsson has its own Suite and Store (not to mention nVidia’s own Tegra Zone), HTC is trying to keep up and add its own gaming services to Taiwan-manufactured devices.
